Beach Safety

Beach SafetyYou’re here and you’re ready to head to the beach! There is not much better than a day of relaxation on the beautiful white sand of Anna Maria Island’s beaches. But, the beach and the Gulf waters can be dangerous if you are not familiar with some general rules of thumb when it comes to beach safety. Here are just a few to follow:

  • Be cautious at all times.
  • Never swim alone.
  • Whenever possible, swim at a lifeguard-protected beach. On Anna Maria Island, there are two public beaches—Coquina Beach and Manatee County Public Beach—that have lifeguards present between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
  • Surf swimming is NOT the same as swimming in a lake or pool! Learn how to swim in the surf.
  • Stay at least 100 feet away from piers as permanent rip currents often exist alongside these structures.
  • When at the beach, consider using polarized sunglasses.
  • Pay especially close attention to children and the elderly when at the beach. Even in shallow water, wave action can cause loss of footing. Appoint someone who won’t be texting, reading or otherwise distracted to be the young swimmer’s water-watcher.
