Housed in the restored historic 1912 schoolhouse located on the park like grounds of the Cortez Nature Preserve just south of Anna Maria Island, the Florida Maritime Museum captures the true essence of the historic fishing village of Cortez and the Florida fishing industry.
At the museum you will find pieces of the almost forgotten past — the Banks Shell collection, ship models, historic boats and a surprise butterfly garden. You will also have the opportunity to build boats and learn boat-related skills in the historic Pillsbury Boat Shop. Weekend workshops and ongoing programs include building a racing Puddle Duck complete with a sail rig and Skin on Frame kayaks.
The museum is a member of the North American Reciprocal Museums Association. NARM is an affiliation of arts and cultural institutions across North America, including the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Individuals who join a participating NARM institution can receive free admission/discounts at over 650 institutions. Additional regional institutions in NARM include the Anna Maria Island Historical Museum, Ringling, The Dali Museum and theFlorida Holocaust Museum.
